One of the most exciting things that can happen is the addition of a new puppy or kitten to your family. This new pet will assuredly make everyone's day a little brighter.
While you may be tempted to focus on the fun, it is also important to focus on the serious health care requirements that are essential during your new pet's first year of life.
Your vet will work with you to create a custom health care plan specific to your pet's unique needs during their first year of life, and provide you with any advice and guidance you might need along the way!
Your Pet’s First Vet Visit
It is recommended that your puppy has their first wellness exam at approximately 6 weeks of age, and kittens around 8 weeks.
Your vet will complete a physical examination to determine your new pet's overall health, look for signs of any congenital defects, and examine them for external parasites.
During your new companion's first visit your vet will usually administer any parasite prevention medications as well as the first round of puppy or kitten vaccinations.

If you have a kitten your vet may also perform a blood test to check for feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency virus.
Future Preventive Care
Your new pet must receive the necessary preventive care during the first year of life. Puppies and kittens will have approximately 3 to 4 wellness appointments between 6 and 16 weeks of age to get a health check and receive the appropriate immunizations.
